gps-kitesurfing

We have identified an issue in the latest firmware for the APEX Pro and VERTIX - v 3.0508.0 released 7 Aug 2024. Regretfully, the issue affects the accuracy and integrity of speeds being recorded by the APEX Pro and VERTIX. We recommend that APEX Pro and VERTIX users do not upgrade to firmware v 3.0508.0.

Users who have already upgraded, but own another verified device are requested to post from that device when possible. Our tech crew, supported with technical expertise from our community is actively working with COROS to get this issue resolved ASAP, and we will keep you updated.  For now we advise to avoid competitions to run on max 2s speed or on single 10sec runs, we recommend to use the 5x10s AVG or 500meters instead.

GP3S Crew

I have tried to illustrate the issues by driving around a short test circuit; 3 laps with total distance of 5 km. These show what is "normal" for these firmware releases but much bigger issues are evident in real session data.

My advice would be to avoid any firmware release since May 2024 - 3.0408.0 / 3.0409.0 upwards, especially 3.0508.0 on the APEX Pro / VERTIX. If you have an APEX Pro or VERTIX, you can downgrade to a working firmware (3.0309.0) using the instructions at support.coros.com/hc/en-us/articles/15344945273620-How-to-manually-update-my-COROS-watch

I've not managed to downgrade my APEX 2 Pro (yet), although I believe it should be possible. If anyone has any luck downgrading their APEX 2 / APEX 2 Pro / VERTIX 2 / VERTIX 2S then please let us know how to do it.

Just bought a new Coros yesterday, especially for this site. Does this issue also include the Apex2Pro and Vertix2?

The APEX 2 Pro and VERTIX 2 are affected, but to a lesser extent than the APEX Pro and VERTIX.

Be sure to use all systems or dual frequency (not regular GPS) to minimise the effects.

If you are on firmware 3.0309.0 (or earlier) then it is advisable not to upgrade, until COROS resolve the issue.

COROS are aware of the issue and working on a fix.

Is there anything new about the faulty firmware 3.0508.0?

I wanted to downgrade but I can't open this page --> support.coros.com/hc/en-us/articles/15344945273620-How-to-manually-update-my-COROS-watch

Apparently I'm not authorized to open this page?!
Can someone send me instructions on how to downgrade please.

Many thanks in advance!

Tech crew just received a new beta, we will test this one this week, will share info asap.

I've update to Beta FW 3.0707.0
Yesterday I used this new version in Speedsurfing mode and I was not happy with the numbers I got
Display and upload on GP3S where the same, but not what I expected.
Some numbers
Fit/GP3S : 40,28kts (74,6kph) avg
GPX : 42,45kts (78,61kph) avg
Reverence is a Gyro with raw UBX logging : 41,67kts (77,19kph)

Posted logs : https://www.gps-speedsurfing.com/default.aspx?mnu=forum&forum=2&val=220858

Thnx for reporting, we also noticed this with the Vertix 2S and reported this back to Coros. The build for Apex provided much better data and brings the Coros devices back on the same level (and even a bit better) in comparison with the May software deployments. Please forward also the raw .UBX data and .FIT from the Vertix 2S to info@gps-speedsurfing.com , so we can share it with Coros.

To clarify the 3.070x.0 beta release(s) have re-introduced the May issue for the Vertix 2 / 2S. This has been documented at https://logiqx.github.io/gps-details/devices/coros/smoothing/

The APEX 2 and APEX 2 Pro have improved significantly in the 3.070x.0 beta release(s), suggesting they failed to implement the same patch on the 4 newer models. The older APEX Pro and VERTIX still require a fix for the problem which was introduced in v 3.050x.0.

Anybody concered about the accuracy of the speedsurfing mode on their COROS can of course log a call with COROS. The product team have been provided with numerous articles that I've written about the issues - https://logiqx.github.io/gps-details/devices/coros/

Differences between the GPX and FIT are because there is no universal standard for speed in GPX 1.1 files. The COROS approach is not supported by all software that reads GPX files, hence the apparent differences between GPX and FIT.

So Corors decided to no longer support Vertix 1, APex pro etc - no more firmware updates.
https://support.coros.com/hc/en-us/articles/30226328392724-Firmware-Status-Update-PACE-2-APEX-Pro-VERTIX-1
They release a version that doesnt work, remove tha possability to go back to the may-release send out a new releaae that deosnt work either and then decide not to give out any new firmware releases? Is this even a seriuos company?
Are we making it easy for windsurfers to understand and do speed windsurfing when these things happen? What device should you buy, which are ok to use?

As stated by Michael George, please report these issues to Coros directly. From our side we are still working with Coros to see what can be done to get this fixed. The tech crew is also working on alternatives, we expect to share more info on this before the end of this year.

Fortunately, it is possible to revert the APEX Pro and VERTIX back to firmware 3.0309.

COROS have removed the instructions from their website, but I've copied them to this page:

https://logiqx.github.io/gps-details/devices/coros/firmware/downgrade.html

The links to the firmware still work. Should they stop working in the future, I will upload the files to GitHub.

I see that a number of the guys in Luderitz still use the APEX Pro or VERTIX.

It is very unfortunate that these devices cannot be trusted with firmware 3.050x.0, especially 2 seconds.

It been 3 months since the problems with 3.050x.0 were first reported and no fix, or news about a fix.

@techcrew - i was hoping to get some feedback/update as this issue compromises the fundemental use of this site and our great sport!

fully understand this is out of the hands of GPS Speedsurfing but Coros is not helpfull at all in this manour.

In the meantime i received software update v3.0708.0 for my Vertix 2, no clue if it is advisable to update as i am coming from bad v3.0510.0.

Greatly value your work!

@Eric - You are better off staying with 3.0510.0 and avoiding 3.070x.0 on your VERTIX 2.

The same applies to anyone with the VERTIX 2S - definitely avoid 3.070x.0.

The only watches to benefit from 3.0706.0 / 3.0707.0 / 3.0708.0 are the APEX 2 and APEX 2 Pro.

Highly appreciated Michael!

Highly appreciated Michael!

My Apex Pro has the new V3.7.8 and it is back to normal, speeds are nearly the same as the mini motion, before the update I found the speeds were 1-2 knots slower compared to the motion.

@Meta - You must have the Apex 2 Pro if you have 3.0708.0, not the APEX Pro.

In one of the earlier posts, I mentioned that 3.0708.0 significantly improves the APEX 2 and APEX 2 Pro. The 3.0408.0 firmware (released in May) made the APEX 2, APEX 2 Pro, VERTIX 2 + 2S slower, but 3.0708.0 restored fixed the APEX 2 and APEX 2 Pro.

The original APEX Pro and VERTIX are on firmwre 3.0508.0 which is broken. The VERTIX 2 and 2S are also broken, even with 3.0708.0 but recent testing of the latest private beta has shown that the next public release will fix the VERTIX 2 + 2S.

hello i am new member in this site and i find posts about this Coros problem.  i have Coros Vertix 2 with V3.0708.0 and now i see i can update till v 3.0709.0 . what is the best to do now?

I'll test 3.0709.0 on the VERTIX 2 and APEX 2 Pro and report back tomorrow.

I'm sorry to say that 3.0709.0 does not include the fix that I tested this week.

Here is a quick write up of tonight's quick test - https://logiqx.github.io/gps-details/devices/coros/firmware/3.0709.0/

I've created a table summary of the COROS firmware releases.

???? = working

????= ok-ish

????= broken

You can find it at https://logiqx.github.io/gps-details/devices/coros/firmware/#summary

Thanks Michael for this comprehensive feedbacks and firmware overview. Hopefully COROS will solve the remaining and returning issues structurally for us in future firmware updates. Thanks for your efforts!

I lost my GW60 (it is somewhere at the bottom of the sea) and would now like to purchase a Coros watch. Is the Vertix 2s certified, and if so, does it have the same problems as the Vertix2 watch? Should I rather buy a watch from another brand?

Thank you for your advice!

Hi Nicolaas. I'm sorry to hear about you watch.

The VERTIX 2 and 2S both have the same issue at this time and will under-report. There is a summary at https://logiqx.github.io/gps-details/devices/coros/firmware/3.0709.0/

COROS have provided a private beta which fixes the issue and we are trying to get confirmation of the public release date.

You have a few COROS options at this time:

- Get the APEX 2 Pro which does work correctly

- Buy a VERTIX 2 now and trust that COROS will release the fix.

- Wait for the fix to be released and then buy a VERTIX 2

Regarding other brands, some Garmin watches will be approved in the new year but their evaluation is still in progress.

It is highly likely the approved list will include the fenix 7 models with multi-band, which are currently available at a very good price.

If you can wait a few weeks for more clarity that may be prudent.

Typo - When I referred to the VERTIX 2 in your options, I actually meant the VERTIX 2S.

I also raised the issue directly with Coros for my Vertix 2. This is their response "We have been advised the latest update resolves the issue. It is your choice to update or not to if you wish to but it should be resolved."

Are they in denial or is the speedsurfing issue resolved?

That is a very disappointing response from the support team at COROS.

- 3.0708.1113 beta was built on 11 Nov 2023, and was sent to us on 26 Nov.

- 3.0709.0 was released on 3 Dec, but does not include the fix.

We are still awaiting information about when the fix will be included in a public firmware release.

Correction: 3.0708.1113 beta was built on 13 Nov 2023

Aargh,,, 13 Nov 2024

Update from COROS:

"The fix for VERTIX 2 + 2S will be available in the app store in late January, and available in a public beta early January."

So that will be 6-7 weeks until the public release. Perhaps 3-4 weeks, if you sign up to their beta programme, once it is announced.

@Michael, signing up to the Beta program is not possible at this point in time, reporting being closed. Any chance you can share the working 3.0708.1113 beta with the community? thanks.

I'll look to upload the files and write some instructions this weekend, maybe even do a video.

APEX Pro, VERTIX, VERTIX 2 and VERTIX 2S all have different files and installation procedures.

Really really great, i think you are helping a lot of people with this, as there is no clear solution available (beta not available, help desk doesnt know, software downgrade not possible, next software update is unclear when/if it will work at all). Coros clearly hasn't been supportive to our sport over the last season and i'm out of options and about done with it. Many thanks helping out!

I've ZIPed up the firmwares and written some instructions.

APEX Pro + VERTIX - FW3.0309.0
https://logiqx.github.io/gps-details/devices/coros/firmware/3.0309.0/install.html

VERTIX 2 + 2S - FW3.0708.1113
https://logiqx.github.io/gps-details/devices/coros/firmware/3.0708.1113/install.html

Reporting that installing my Vertix 2 went flawless. I am really happy that after months i finally have a working solution thanks to you.

If i can be of any support to you in any way just reach-out to me.

Really greatfull for this mate!

Excellent, thanks!

Downgrading the Vertix firmware from 3.0508.0 to 3.0309.0 with your instructions worked perfect. On my Linux computer the "Vertix-drive" had to be demounted and the USB plug pulled to start the Updating Process.

Great thanks
